Close your eyes…well not literally or you couldn’t continue reading our post, nevertheless imagine this. After a hellacious week of work commuting back and forth through Bay Area traffic, working long hours probably without a lunch break or even a moment to unwind. What better way to start your sunny and warm weekend off than at your local farmers market? Being drawn in with the intoxicating combination of aromas coming from savory, herb crusted, slow-roasted rotisserie chickens from RoliRoti, while just across the street smells of freshly popped kettle corn stimulate your senses pulling you in the opposite direction. If this has your mouth-watering then the Downtown Pleasanton Farmers’ Market is where you need to be this Saturday.
Erika and I are quite the foodies, thrill-seekers, and adventurers (hence the name of our blog) and this has a lot to do with why we seek out inspiring Farmers Markets. Maybe it is the eclectic atmosphere that consumes you and turns your trip to the market into an episode of Parts Unknown. Maybe its having the ability to submerge yourself into what feels like another part of the world. Or maybe it’s just because we are another struggling Bay Area couple looking for great food and even better prices. Whatever the reason, Farmers Markets make Erika and I feel happy, healthy, and free and we want to share that with you, our potential followers.
AND IT IS A GREAT WAY TO SUPPORT LOCAL SMALL BUSINESSES!
Here are a few colorful photos:
The market stretches about 3/4 the length of a football field, and is only as wide as a two lane road, but boy do they pack it in. We have found that we can accomplish up to 80% of our normal grocery shopping here, and how cool is that? There is just something reassuring about buying your food from the people who grow it. How often have you turned a product around in a store hoping to decode whats on the back, and gotten caught up on a word like Azodicarbonamide…What the hell does that mean anyway?
Farmers Markets embody so many important facets of life. So much so, that they are really quite necessary for the progression of any community. Being able to escape the fast paced nature of our Bay Area even for a moment to learn, taste, and feel new ideas is key to promoting prosperity for ourselves.
Lets wrap it up…
All-in-all, the Pleasanton Farmers Market is more than just a place to get a few groceries. It is an escape from reality, an institute for culinary expression for all those Chef Boyardee’s out their, and an eclectic safe haven where you are judged by the depth of your content and nothing more. So if you are in need of a place like this, come hang out with Erika and I any Saturday in beautiful Downtown Pleasanton.
How to – Farmers Market the right way:
- Come with an appetite
- Be open-minded to new ingredients
- Ask lots of questions – How do I cook this? Where is this grown?
- Bring Ca$h
- Bring a few reusable bags
- Smile & have fun
- Vendors will let you sample their products, so ask!
- Buy something you have never eaten or prepared before
- Don’t buy more perishables than you can cook
The list could go on, but for now try these and I do believe that your Farmers Market experience will drastically improve.
Pleasanton’s Farmers’ Market is located on Main Street and West Angela Street. Rain or shine, this market occurs every Saturday from 9AM to 1PM, year-round! How awesome is that?!
